I'm not sure I necessarily agree with the numbers, although I do agree with the general point of the statement. Accountants do a lot more than taxes. Certainly jobs would be lost if we switched to a flat tax system. However I think even more atrocious is making someone who makes $20k pay the same as someone who makes $200k. Assuming a 10% tax, that $2k means more to the person making $20k than $20k or even $40k would mean to the person making $200k. A flat tax is regressive. That is all.
Deon) They claim to cut taxes in certain places but they raise it back up with a new tax anyways..
NayNay) I also dislike frogs :O
Lurker) Yes and No.
Bill) I found the numbers in library books. I assumed that it would be around half of all accountants but that may be exaggerated. I do agree that the tax is regressive. Great points!
Cran) We will always have bigshot corporate lawyers. I doubt the flat tax will kill them off :) Good thought though!
Beer) I know he is such a cute little duck :) I may talk about serious things in my blog but everyone loves cute animals.
Alex) Ducks do bite! Oh my one of these days ill write my story and post it on here about when I was almost murdered by a horde of them :P
i'm laughing, but i don't see the duck connection. does that mean we may not like taxes, but accountants are still cool? i know a guy who got attacked by a horse, & it took him years before he made peace with horses again.
The flat tax would destroy too many jobs and federal positions. Sigh. It is a nice thought though. I followed you over from Alex's blog. You have a new follower, Roland
There is also the issue of self employed salesmen/women who make a lot of money, but it costs them a lot of money to make that money. If you made $100,000 a year but it cost you $40,000, would you be taxed on $100,000 or $60,000? I guess I don't know enough about it.
Actually...I think we would still need the IRS even if the US implemented a flat tax. The reason is that the IRS has issued extremely difficult code and regulation for the layman to understand that often times corporations hire consultants to decipher the rules to construct savvy tax planning strategies. At times these strategies can abuse the system for example, Tax Shelters.
I don't even know why people come up with such a ridiculous idea such as the flat tax. Even with all the other cons, the ones you've listed should be enough to deter anyone from agreeing with this..
As stated by Bill above, a flat tax would lower the rate for higher income earners while raising the tax rate for the lowest bracket (something that tends to be overlooked).
But corporate taxes would still require and accountant. And that's the bulk of the good business (two of my sisters are accountants, but in Ireland). Our government has been talking about a restructuring for years and years. It may never happen and with an election year in the States, they'll say anything for a vote.
The Flat tax rate is for people that don't understand the importance of money. Money is relative. The more you have the less you care. The less you have the more you care. Even at 1/2 of salaries over 1 million dollars the earner will not be in great financial turmoil.
Baur) No one likes them but you gotta know about them.
Pat) I am also quite certain this will never happen.
Teddi) My mom always told people not to bring me around ducks when we went on school fieldtrips and what not. A few kids called me duckboy... Which I don't get because it should of been something like noduckboy or scaredofducksboy. I am no duck! :P
Roland) It isn't only the IRS who will be laying off accountants.. Well they will still need them just not as many.
Luckyjoe) I feel the exact same way!
Life 101) That is a very good point. I think you would only be taxed on your gain for the month.
Bravoe) Yes, we would still need a IRS. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I am not a smart man :)
Speakers) My opinions on this matter are very one sided. The flaws with our current system may weigh the out the flat tax as a good plan.
Donna) That is very true. I grew up in a janitors family and I know for a fact that the taxes are already too high.
Astra) Only about half of the number I said above.
Kelly) I have heard every pun about It from my brother.. You were bit by a duck?!? Are you quacktagious?!?
Whoever I haven't gotten to yet I will continue later. :)

Frogs are scary :(
The flat tax....would it work?

If the flat tax would eliminate many lawyers, then the flat tax sounds just dandy!
Nope, didn't understand a lick of that taxation mumbo jumbo, but I do love me a cute baby duck. Cheers!
Ducks bite!
Not sure I buy all that data, but what do I know?

Ah dreaded taxes...... Following
Doubtful this will ever come to be, but it is an interesting concept, whether or not it work is anyones guess.

I don't think a flat tax would be a good thing at all. 10% of a poorer person's money means a lot more to them than 10% to a millionaire.
There is also the issue of self employed salesmen/women who make a lot of money, but it costs them a lot of money to make that money.

Weird Interesting News
Change is always hard, and it's tough to get people to agree to it if there's any chance that poor people might end up paying more.
thats a lot of people who would loose their jobs
I don't think a flat tax will be given the okay anytime soon. You were almost murdered by a duck? That's absolutely quackers!
I'm anxiously awaiting the duck story.
ugh taxes are getting crazier these days
Murdered by ducks... wait wut?

simpler taxes raise unemployment? wow
I'm with you on this one. Flat tax is not plausible in these here (semi) United States.
Interesting blog!
Please follow me and check out my blog also!
Conversely think about the money people save from NOT having to hire an accountant to solve a convoluted tax system which boggles the minds of many.
I don't like the idea of a flat tax. The rich can afford to pay more, so why not?
But corporate taxes would still require and accountant. And that's the bulk of the good business (two of my sisters are accountants, but in Ireland). Our government has been talking about a restructuring for years and years. It may never happen and with an election year in the States, they'll say anything for a vote.
THIS DUCK IS SCARY :D nice post ;]
As much as it sounds simpler, it would never happen.
Ducks are awesome. They're better than the IRS. :D
If they automated all stores and rebuild citys better we could eliminate 95% of all jobs!
Very interesting statistics!!!
John
Why don't Ducks Quacks echo? That always bothered me--like they were covert or something??
J
i agree with you! now following as well!
cool blog, i like ;)
